The Police Threatened to Take My Children Away if I Don’t Confess, What Should I Do?

Luff Strenfel LLP Nov. 4, 2018

The police threatened to take my children away if I don’t confess, what should I do? If the police have had cause to come into your life and believe that a crime has been committed, they can use many tactics to accomplish what they believe is their goal. I have heard many stories where police threaten a person’s child or children if that person does not confess to a crime that the police believe that person committed. If you ever find yourself in this situation you should know a few things. If the police truly believe that you committed this crime, they are going to arrest you whether or not you confess to it. So, it is in your best interest to say nothing. Secondly, I have never in my life heard of a person confessing to the crime and the police not taking the children anyway. This is a scare tactic to get a confession under duress. The police will then try to use that confession against you at a trial, and it will be an uphill battle to try and avoid it being used against you. I know that it can be scary to think that police can use your children against you, but if you want to do what is best for them you need to call a lawyer. Do not confess or speak to the police ever without an attorney present.
