Actions to consider after a car accident

| May 6, 2021 | Car Accident |

  • Identify the other drivers involved and other witnesses if there any;

  • Report the accident to the police and get the incident report number;

  • Report the accident to your auto insurance company so they can open up a medical payment claim for you;

  • Pennsylvania is a NO-FAULT state, which means that YOUR auto insurance will be the primary payor of medical costs NOT the other driver’s.

  • Take pictures of the accident scene and the damage to the cars involved;

  • Take photos of any visible injuries you may have;

  • If you think you are injured or have pain and discomfort, go to the emergency room or see a doctor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Some injuries do not start to cause pain for days or even weeks after the accident and can still result in long term problems. It is always best to have a full medical exam to rule out any potential problems;

  • Always be clear with the doctors about where your pain is coming from and that it started after the car accident;

  • NEVER speak to anyone from the other driver’s insurance company about how the accident happened. Always remember that the other insurance company never has your best interests in mind and will seek to limit their exposure at all times

  • Keep evidence of any financial expenses related to the accident. This includes medical bills or co-pays, prescription medications, repair bills for the car and proof that you have missed work.

  • If a doctor writes you out of work, be sure to keep a copy of the note he or she provides;
